“SUN-MAR's patented double drum Autoflow design makes composting kitchen scraps and yard trimmings a no-brainer!”
Highlights
- Ideal for composting kitchen scraps and a few cut up yard and garden trimmings
- Double drum keeps compost moving as it decomposes, so no more waiting for batches to finish
- Compost that's ready sifts into the inner drum, and discharges automatically
- Easy loading and turning of the composter handle
- Big capacity
- Easy assembly that makes about 5 minutes
- Comes with snap-on optional wheels, which makes it easier to move on hard surfaces
- Pest proof
How It Works
SUN-MAR Garden Composter 400 is considerably bigger than SUN-MAR 200. Otherwise, it works on the same principals as the 200, and has the patented double drum Autoflow design. The “in the top, out the end” design basically allows you to add kitchen, garden and yard scraps and trimmings in the top opening; and rotate the drum using a handle to mix and push the ready compost through the outer drum, then inner drum, and finally the side opening.

Quick Composting Tips
Compost should be well mixed, oxygenated, moist and have roughly the right carbon to nitrogen ratio. This sounds difficult, but in a SUN-MAR it is surprisingly easy.
- Keep the Compost Moist and Oxygenated: Rotate the drum regularly to add oxygen to the pile, and to add moisture if you think the compost is looking a bit dry. Rotating the waste will evenly distribute the moisture, exposing the mixture to oxygen; and mix the new waste in with the old, which serves to help to physically break up and mix the waste.
- Keep the Compost Warm: The compost in the drum and the drum's insulating properties will keep the heat in, but composting will stop when temperatures drops below 50 degrees F. If compost becomes frozen in the drum, do not try to rotate the drum. Wait until the spring comes (to thaw); in the meantime, you can continue to add waste in the drum.
- Aim for the right Carbon/Nitrogen Ratio: For faster results, add carbon rich material (browns) like sawdust, straw, dry leaves, or wood chips (not cedar) into the nitrogen rich mixture of kitchen and garden waste. If you only use kitchen waste, add bulking or pre-composted materials (e.g., sample of Compost Swift included in your SUN-mar 400 purchase) to add oxygen. As a general rule, chop up the waste if possible, since smaller waste breaks down faster.
