| Here is some data to demonstrate the water savings and return on investment for these inexpensive kits:
1.5 gpm Showerhead
An older showerhead is typically 3-5 gallons per minute and though that may not seem like much, these numbers represent the amount of gallons of water used per minute and not per shower. Running this showerhead at full flow will result in the use of 30-50 gallons of water within 10 minutes. The Niagara 1.5 gpm would only use 15 gallons in 10 minutes. The water savings amount up to 35 gallons of water per person. Assuming 10 minutes showers for a family of 4 (and teenagers typically use a lot more)….this would represent a savings of 140 gallons in 1 day. Or 51,000 gallons each year!
Aerators
Standard bathroom faucet aerators can also waste water—using approximately 2.2 gallons per minute. Assuming a household of four has the faucet on for a total of 30 minutes each day, approximately 66 gallons of water is flowing through these faucets each day. This is 1,980 gallons each month. By installing a water saving aerators, you can save almost 50 percent of water waste. Likewise, standard kitchen aerators can waste a lot of water, especially when then are continuously on while rinsing dishes. Consider switching to flow control kitchen aerators for significant water savings.
Toilet Tank Bank
The low cost toilet tank bank delivers an immediate return on investment. It saves about 0.8 gallons amount of water with each flush. Assuming daily 7 flushes for a family of 4 (28 flushes)…this would result in 22 gallons of water saved. Or 8176 gallons saved annually.
Toilet Leak Detection Tablets
Toilet Leaks account for the most common wastage of water. If your water bills have suddenly increased, chances are you have a leaky toilet. E.g. Toilet leaks can waste as much as two to five gallons of water per minute. Assuming even two gallons per minute wasted, this amounts to 120 gallons per hour and and 2880 gallons per day. A leak can easily cost you up to $100.00 per month in increased water and waste water bills. This is a shame especially since it's so easy and cheap to detect. Simply install a leak detection tablet which turns colors the water in the toilet bowl blue if a leak is present.
Shower Timer
If you were aware of your water usage a shower and could cut your shower timer in half…it would result in tremendous savings! The shower timer notifies you when your 5 minutes of shower time are up. Assuming even a water efficient showerhead…in the example above..you could cut your water use by 30 gallons daily for a family of four…or 10950 gallons each year. |
